Alice Calderon Hernandez peacefully passed at home and into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus on Saturday, August 15, 2020, in Needles, California. Alice was born to the late Rufino and Clara Calderon.
Alice married Alfredo Hernandez July 24, 1951. Later that year they spent the night in Pittsburg, California, and the next morning said their goodbyes as Alfredo was sailing off to Guam. Alice was supposed to be on the first train home, instead took a taxi to the harbor port and saw Alfredo from a distance board and sail off. Alfredo dedicated the song, “Harbor Lights” to his love and was known to sing it to her for the next 69 years. Their love was nothing less than a true love story.
In the early seventies Alice worked at various restaurants as a waitress. She started cooking at Sambos restaurant in Needles, California, and in 1975 became Sambos manager until she left in 1979, and went to work for the Avi Casino as a pantry cook; where she retired at the age of 60.
Alice loved the holidays, especially Thanksgiving and Christmas. She enjoyed spending time with her loved ones celebrating them. As the family grew and could no longer fit the dining room table, Alice would move her living room furniture to the side to add more tables for a feast. In the mid 70’s, Alice and her husband Alfred coached girls softball. They were lifelong members of the Eagle Lodge and Elks Lodge. At the Eagles Lodge she cooked up her famous delicious enchiladas on many occasions. In the mid 80’s she participated in the Cinco De Mayo festivities, and loved going to local parades for the candy of course.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Dennis Hernandez and Larry Hernandez; father, Rufino Calderon; mother, Clara Calderon; siblings, Rufino Calderon, Jr., Ruth (Cuca) Fargoso, John Calderon; grandson, Pete Rodriguez Iv; great-grandson, Pete Rodriguez V; twin great-grandchildren, Rays and Breah Hernandez, and Neal Junior Hernandez; nephews, John Calderon, Johnny Fargoso, Jessie Fargoso, Michael McAllister
