Elizabeth Ann Young Figley
Our beloved sister and aunt, Elizabeth (“Liz”) Ann Young Figley died unexpectedly on December 21, 2021 at her home in Fort Mohave Arizona.
Liz was born September 1 1958, to the late Vaughn N. and Doris L. (Blair) Young, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, the middle daughter of 3 girls, and was raised in West Liberty, Ohio. She will always be remembered for her quick wit and ability to make people laugh, and will be missed greatly by her family and friends.
Liz graduated in 1976 from West Liberty-Salem High School, where she was one of the first female athletic trainers in the area. Always knowing she wanted to become a nurse like her mother, she graduated in 1979 from the Ohio State University, Lima Branch, with a degree in nursing. She worked in the intensive care unit at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana and in obstetrics and surgery at Mary Rutan Hospital in Bellefontaine, where she obtained an advanced Certified Post-Anesthesia Nurse certification. Upon moving to Nevada, then Arizona in 1995, she continued her nursing career at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center, Palo Verde Hospital, and Colorado River Medical Center.
She loved travel, scuba diving, playing trivia, British TV and was a voracious reader. She was a true animal lover, and even rescued lizards and geckos outside her Arizona home. Liz loved her visits home to Ohio the most, and was planning an imminent move back home.
She is survived by her sisters, Rebecca Young Turner of Bellefontaine OH and Martha (Joe) Young Mount of Asheville/Winston-Salem NC, in addition to 3 nieces Emily (Austin) Thornburg, West Liberty OH, Laura (Anthony) Dillard Hilliard OH and Katherine Mount, New York City, NY; and 2 nephews Michael Mount of Asheville NC, and Eric Mount, Portland, OR. Liz delighted in her great nieces and nephew Myla Thornburg, Bryden Dillard and Owen Thornburg. She is also survived by six cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her aunt Rev. Sarah Young, a half-brother Curtis Young, a brother-in-law John Turner and her long-time companion Richard Simpson.
A memorial service for Liz will be held later this winter in Bellefontaine, Ohio. Memorial gifts in Liz’s memory may be made to her favorite charity Heifer International, 1 Worlld Avenue, Little Rock AR 72202; or www.heifer.org. The family was served by Desert Lawn Funeral Home, Bullhead City AZ.
